Umrah rituals
The pilgrim performs a series of symbolic ritual acts of the
life of Ibrahim (Abraham) and his second wife Hajar, and solidarity with
Muslims throughout the world. These acts of faith are as follows:
Perform a tawaf "طواف", which consists of circles
to the Kaaba seven times in an anti-clockwise sense. They are encouraged to do
this three times at a hurried pace, followed four times, more closely, at a

Perform a Sa'i "سعي", which means quick walking
seven times back and forth between the hills of Safa and Marwa. This is a

Perform a Halq or taqsir, that is, a haircut. A taqsir is a
partial shortening of the hair, while a Halq is a complete shave of the head,
except for women, as they cut a small amount of hair in place.
These rituals complete the Umrah, and the pilgrim can choose
to leave ihram. Although it is not part of the majority ritual, the pilgrims
drink water from the Well of Zamzam. Several sects of Islam perform these
rituals with slightly different methods.
The rush hour of the pilgrimage is the day before, during
and after the pilgrimage and during the last ten days of Ramadan.
