Stampedes and crowd control failures
Sometimes, the growing crowd, trekking from one station of
the pilgrimage to the next, cause a stampede. It spreads panic, pilgrims push
themselves to avoid being trampled, and hundreds of dead can result. The
stoning of the Devil's ceremony is very busy and dangerous
July 2, 1990: A stampede in a pedestrian tunnel (Al-Ma'aisim
tunnel) that leads from Mecca towards Mina, Saudi Arabia and the plains of
Arafat led to the death of 1,426 pilgrims.
May 23, 1994: A stampede killed at least 270 pilgrims in the
stoning of the ritual devil.
April 9, 1998: at least 118 pilgrims were killed and 180
injured in an incident on the Jamarat bridge.
March 5, 2001: Thirty-five pilgrims were trampled to death
in a stampede during the stoning of the ritual devil.
February 11, 2003: The stoning of the Devil's rituals
claimed the lives of 14 pilgrims. "
February 1, 2004: 251 pilgrims died and another was injured
244 in a stampede during the ritual of stoning in Mina.

January 12, 2006: A stampede during the ritual al-Jamarat
ramy on the last day of Hajj in Mina left at least 346 pilgrims and wounded 289
more. The incident occurred shortly after 1:00 pm local time, when a bus full
of travelers arrived together at the eastern access ramps of the Jamarat
Bridge. This caused the pilgrims to travel, quickly resulting in a lethal
crush. It is estimated that two million people were performing the ritual of
the time.
Fires
December 1975: A gas cylinder from the explosion caused a
fire in a tent colony and resulted in the death of 200 pilgrims [6].
April 15, 1997: 343 pilgrims died and 1,500 injured in a
fire at the MINA store, on 8 zillhijja between 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The stores are fireproof. (List may be incomplete).
