Protests and violence
November 20, 1979: A group of some 200 militants occupied
the Great Mosque, and were later expelled by Pakistani and French forces (three
French, reportedly converted to Islam [7].), Leaving some 250 dead and 600

July 31, 1987: Iranian pilgrims mutinied, causing the death
of more than 400 people.
July 9, 1989: Two bombs exploded, killing one pilgrim and
wounding another 16. The Saudi authorities executed 16 Shiite Muslims in Kuwait
for terrorist attacks after they originally suspected Iranian.
Diseases
Mix of visitors from many countries, some of which poor
health systems still plagued by preventable infectious diseases, can lead to
the spread of epidemics. If an outbreak were to occur on the way to Mecca, the
pilgrims could aggravate the problem when they returned home and pass the
infection to other people. This was more of a problem in the past. One of those
diseases, which has prompted the response of the Saudi government, is
meningitis, since it became the main concern after an international outbreak
after the Hajj in 1987. Because of the post-Hajj outbreaks worldwide of certain
types of meningitis in previous years, it is now a visa requirement to be
